When mentioning some of the leading LGBT activists, Janet Mock makes the list. She’s been advocating for LGBT rights ever since she transitioned from being a man to a woman when she was 18 years old. She was encouraged by her friend during her high school years to embrace her femininity. She actually did her sex reassignment surgery in Thailand after earning the money as a sex worker during her teen years. She chose the name “Janet” after Janet Jackson. Mock has is a contributing editor with Marie Claire and has a bestseller book Redefining Realness where she describes her life as a transgender.
