This brilliant poet placed her head into a gas oven at home to kill herself. At the time her two very young children were in bed asleep upstairs (she taped the kitchen door up so they wouldn’t be affected by the gas). At the time her and her husband Ted Hughes, who was also a poet, were separated. She had struggled all her adult life with depression. Nicholas Hughes, their son, in 2009 ended up killing himself.
