Nicki Minaj may have taken the rap world by storm with her raunchy lyrics and eye-catching costumes, but her early years were anything but pleasant. Nicki, whose real name is Onika Maraj grew up in Trinidad and Tobago with her grandmother, while her parents went to the U.S to try and make a better life for them. By age 5 Nicki and her brother went to live with her parents, but by this time her father had become addicted to crack cocaine.
According to the star, her teenage years were filled with terror as she feared that her abusive father would one day kill her mother. It seems that Nicki had valid reasons for these thoughts because one night while she and her brother were at a friends house,their father deliberately burnt down the family house. Nicki’s mother was home when her dad set the house on fire, but luckily she managed to escape. Nicki later became a famous rap star but a family scandal was brewing. In 2015, her brother Jelani Maraj was charged with first degree rape, and first-degree sexual conduct agains a 12 year old girl.
