She was born Darrel Walls as a man, but she always felt like she was “born in the wrong body”. Isis was the first transgender to be featured in America’s Next Top Model. She first came out as gay while in high school. But the “gay” label wasn’t right with her. And so she decided to move to New York to make the transition from man to woman. However, she didn’t have enough money to afford the surgeries. Because her parents didn’t support her decision to transition, Isis moved to Ali Forney Center, a place for homeless LGBT youths. She finally did the reassignment surgery in 2009 after Tyra Banks introduced her to Marci Bowers, a transgender woman and a reassignment surgeon, who took care of all of Isis’ expenses.
